I have lived alone at the head of this hollow for forty years. In that time, people found their way to my porch. Some came for directions. Most came because they had a story sitting on their chest and nowhere safe to put it down.
None of these stories came from books or newspapers. They were spoken across kitchen tables, quiet, the way you talk about things you are not sure should be said out loud. I listened, and when they asked me to remember it right, I did.
